The purpose of the tool is to assist in the fixing of points which have an internal parallel fit onto wooden shafts. When used in conjunction with a power drill/vice and external heat source the shaft is reduced as shown by the old fashioned way of heat compression. This has advantages as most of the material is compressed rather than actually removed.

With softer woods type A-E may work by light removal of material and frictional heat compression/reduction and as such both shaft and tool become hot. With harder/denser woods it will be necessary to apply external heat to the tool before use as per type F.

Type F works only by heat compression of material (may cause marking to shaft end as shown in photo) and must be heated by an external source prior to use or it will not function properly and is best used outside away from any combustible materials. When using any of the tools the operator must ensure safe working practice and wear necessary protective equipment.
